Hot Chip’s “One Life Stand” doesn’t hit shelves in the US until next week, but I have already had a listen to it, and it is quite good. The title track encompasses everything that makes the British electro-pop group so unique and continually good. With a thumping bass line and several different keyboard hooks, it is a musical joy. Lead singer/ Alexis Taylor has an almost schoolboy like voice, and this has contributed to the earnestness of many of the groups best songs, usually in conjunction with the deep voice of Joe Goddard. However, Taylor goes solo for this outing, and it proves very effective. The chorus has an almost seductively desperate tone to it, as he sings “I only want to be your one life stand.” Hot Chip have a knack for making knock-out singles, and “One Life Stand” is no exception.
