On Tuesday the organizers of the 4th Annual Fun Fun Fun Fest, which will take place on November 7th and 8th at Waterloo Park here in Austin, released this year’s lineup. While there several great reasons to drop $67.50, the price has risen a bit from last year, this year’s lineup leaves quite a bit to be desired in comparison to last year.

One of the big selling points of Fun Fun Fun Fest is the sheer amount of genre variety present. There are many Indie acts, including Of Montreal, The Atlas Sound, No Age, Destroyer and Yeasayer. In addition, bands such as F%*ked Up highlight the hardcore sector of rock. One of the big selling points is the presence of a newly reunited Jesus Lizard, one of the most critically acclaimed alternative bands of the late 80’s and early 90’s, and a very rare live showing by the Detroit based, gone before their time punk band Death. Additionally, there is a healthy dose of rap and stand up comedy to round out the mix.

Although this is not a weak lineup by any means, it lacks some of the big names that drew a great number of spectator’s last year. For example, there are no real headliners at this year’s festival that are on the same level marketing wise as The National, Islands, or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. This may be a matter of personal taste, but I believe that last year’s lineup was stronger.

It will be interesting to see how big of an audience this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest will get. It is a lot cheaper than Austin City Limits, but with a lack of any sort of major headliners, I feel it may be harder for them to get people to spend the almost 20 extra dollars this year. I’m all for music festivals in Austin, but this year’s lineup leaves me hungry for SXSW.
